OSCEOLA (c. 1800–1838)

Osceola was born in Alabama of mixed British and Creek parentage and gained renown as a leader of the Florida Seminole at the time of the Second Seminole War. Having opposed the 1832 Treaty of Payne’s Landing by which some of the Seminole had agreed to the U.S. policy of Indian removal, Osceola became the leader of the faction that continued to reject negotiation with the U.S. government. In many ways, two of his actions precipitated the war: he murdered an Indian agent at Fort Drake in 1835, and he inspired others to abandon talks that were taking place with Thomas Jesup. In October 1837, he was arrested under a flag of truce and imprisoned for the rest of his life, dying in Fort Moultrie in Charleston harbor.
